Employment Opportunities
B/L Parks Contracting offers “Workamper” employment for the camping season from approximately mid-April to mid-October yearly. We believe the success and enjoyment of the experience includes a clear understanding of the work involved, compensation offered and the nature and setting of each park site. In some cases, it may not be possible for you to visit the sites before you make a commitment to work for us. The information which follows will be helpful to you in considering employment with us.
Opportunities range from volunteering 16 hours per week in return for a serviced campsite; a combination of a campsite plus an hourly wage for additional hours; or full-time seasonal employment. The wage paid is dependent upon experience, assigned duties / responsibilities and the park. Some of our parks function with one person managing all operations; others with one couple; and the largest park employs several couples and relief staff. We also offer on-site accommodation for rent, for those without their own RV.
Each park has a different character and offers unique attractions:
Goldpan sits on the banks of the Thompson River and is a convenient overnight stop for travelers on Highway #1. It is a destination site for fishermen during peak fishing times and is also a popular base camp for visitors enjoying guided river rafting and exploring the Lytton/Spences Bridge area which is rich in geological and human history. This small park is run by a single person and a primitive (no services) campsite may be provided.
Juniper Beach is also located on the Thompson River and visitors enjoy boating, fishing, photography and touring nearby historic sites in Ashcroft and Cache Creek. Both CNR and CPR railway tracks run by the park and provide an attraction to train-buffs. The park is operated by a couple on a part-time split shift. Compensation includes an enclosed, serviced campsite and wages.
Kentucky Alleyne is a destination campground in a unique natural setting with plenty of wildlife - attractive to both families and adults. It is located between two lakes (Kentucky and Alleyne) and offers two “children only” fishing ponds. The campground is currently managed by a part-time couple on a split shift. Compensation includes an enclosed, semi-primitive campsite and wages.
Marble Canyon is a small, quiet campground set between two lakes – Turquoise and Crown. It is popular as both a destination and an overnight camping stop. This park is a favorite with fishermen, birders, hikers, wildlife viewers and photographers. The area offers exciting rock climbing and unique scuba diving experiences. The park is managed by a single person. A primitive (no services) campsite may be provided.
Monck sits on the shores of Nicola Lake and offers a wide assortment of recreational activities including camping, picnicking, swimming, fishing, boating, water-skiing, wind-surfing, birding, sky-watching and hiking. This very popular family-oriented destination campground is situated in a very hot, dry setting. It is located 20 minutes from Merritt and the area has several golf courses. This site is operated by a combination of an on-site manager, security, maintenance and gatehouse staff. Compensation includes serviced campsites and wages.
Skihist is located above Highway #1 in the Thompson River Canyon not far from the confluence of the blue Thompson and the mighty Fraser Rivers in Lytton. This quiet and peaceful park is a well-placed stop for Canadians, Americans and Europeans on their way to the interior of British Columbia, Yukon and Alaska. The Thompson and Fraser Rivers offer exciting river rafting experiences, the Stein River Valley is close by with breath-taking views and the park itself has over 8 kilometers of hiking trails. This park is operated by a part-time couple on a split shift. Compensation includes either a partially furnished two bedroom cabin or serviced campsite and wages.
Training
B/L Parks Contracting provides training for new employees at the beginning of the season. Returning staff will attend part of the session as a refresher so all staff will have an opportunity to meet and exchange experiences.
The Work
The duties and responsibilities of the site staff are basically the same at each park although Monck also has a gatehouse/store operation. Please review the Park Attendant (Word doc) and Gatehouse & Store (Word doc) Job Descriptions as well as the site information or the links to determine your interest priorities.Your resumes should include experience related to the duties and responsibilities in the Job Description as well as transferable skills.
We prefer applicants interested in working the whole season – April to October – but will consider applicants for shorter periods should the opportunities arise. For more information, contact us via e-mail at blparks@hughes.net.
Volunteer Opportunities
Enjoy camping by beautiful lakes, rivers or deserts; meet new people; gain valuable new skills; make a difference in your Provincial Parks. Enthusiastic, self-motivated, energetic and friendly volunteers may serve through several options:
- Park or campground hosts – provide information about the park, surroundings, local attractions and services and provide guests with a sense of security by being highly visible.
- Conduct naturalist, interpretive or environmental education programs, or teach an outdoor skill.
- Maintain or upgrade trail systems.
- Relieve regular staff for days off / emergencies – camper registration, facility sanitation.
- Act as a “mystery camper” to evaluate the parks from a campers’ perspective – assess our customer service levels, park programs, facility sanitation, etc.
A free campsite is often provided and small, well behaved pets are welcome.
We wish to utilize the skills and talents of our volunteers to tailor the work they do for us and to increase their enjoyment of the Provincial Park experience. Let us know what we can do for you!
